The controversy about the origins of jollof rice in West Africa has been rekindled by former Minister of Information Lai Mohammed, who asserts that the popular meal originated in Senegal and was traditionally fed to inmates.
In a recent interview, Mohammed connected the word “jollof” to “Wollof,” pointing out that many people are unaware of the dish’s actual origins.
He explained, “Jollof rice was actually that food that was prepared for prisoners, ‘cos it was that food that was put in one plate, oil, salt, you know, and everything. So really everything of jollof is Wollof.”
Mohammed said that the dish’s Senegalese origins were later verified on Wikipedia by tourism agencies and even a UN-related source.
The minister’s comments have brought attention to how fervently individuals protect their cultural history and sense of national pride, especially when it comes to a meal that has come to represent West Africa.
