A Nigerian man has stirred intense reactions online after sharing how his close friend was publicly rejected during a surprise proposal, only to discover she had been in another relationship for years.
The story, posted on X, formerly known as X, has reopened conversations about trust, commitment and double dating in modern relationships.
According to the man, the incident happened in 2015 after his friend dated a woman for five years.
In a grand romantic gesture, he flew her from Abuja to Lagos to celebrate his birthday.
Friends filled the house. Cameras were set. The mood was festive and hopeful. Then came the defining moment.
“He knelt down… and she said NO,” the post read. Guests watched in shock as the carefully planned proposal collapsed within seconds.
Two weeks later, the lady reportedly married another man. She blocked his friend on all platforms and cut off communication completely.
The painful rejection was only part of the story.
Later, mutual friends allegedly discovered that she had been dating another man in Abuja for about two years while still in the five-year relationship.
The revelation deepened the heartbreak. What seemed like a sudden betrayal turned out to be a long-running secret.
For the rejected suitor, it was not just about embarrassment. It was about lost time, broken trust and emotional investment.
Despite the humiliation, the man said his friend eventually found clarity. “At first, he was shattered,” he wrote.
But with time came a new perspective. “Rejection is protection.” He added, “A ‘yes’ from someone unsure can ruin your life.”
The experience, though painful, may have prevented a marriage built on divided loyalty.
