Kyle Walker retires from England duty after 96 caps

Kyle Walker has announced his retirement from international football, ending a distinguished career with the England national team.

The 35-year-old Burnley defender announced his decision with immediate effect, having earned 96 caps and represented England in five international championships. Walker, whose final appearance was in a friendly against Senegal’s national football team at the City Ground in June 2025, called his international career as a “whirlwind of a journey” and stated that the “book has now closed.”

Walker earned his England debut against the Spanish national football team in November 2011 and has since established himself as one of the side’s most dependable defenders.

The veteran right-back competed in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and three European Championships (UEFA Euro 2016, UEFA Euro 2020, and UEFA Euro 2024).

Prior to joining Burnley, Walker played for Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City.

Walker reflected on his international career, saying that representing England was one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.

“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” he said.

“To win so many caps is a great honour and something I’m extremely proud of.”

Walker scored his only international goal in September 2023, against the Ukrainian national football team.

He also expressed hope that his generation may help modify opinions of the national team.

“We’ve tried to change the way that people look at English football and how the media views the national team,” Walker said.

“There should always be pressure playing for your country, but we’re the chosen ones who are lucky enough to wear the shirt and represent England.”
