A Nigerian woman has sparked reactions online after recounting how a clothes seller in Oshodi, Lagos State, allegedly advertised jeans for ₦1,000 and polo tops for ₦700, only to demand significantly higher prices after customers selected their items.
The woman, identified as @Olami_deeEbony on X, said she and a colleague were attracted by the trader’s loud announcements as he rang a bell to draw shoppers to his merchandise.
According to her, the seller repeatedly advertised the clothes at prices that appeared affordable, prompting several people to stop and shop.
Seller allegedly quotes higher prices after selection
Recounting the incident, the woman said the trader called out:
“Quality tops and jeans! Jean ₦1,000, polo tops ₦700! Oya, rush me now!”
She said her colleague was impressed by the advertised prices and exclaimed:
“Dee baby, see boutique-standard tops and jeans for ₦1k!”
The two women subsequently joined other shoppers to select clothes from the seller.
According to the account, her colleague picked five pairs of jeans and 10 tops, while she selected three pairs of jeans and four tops.
However, the situation reportedly changed when they finished selecting their items and asked the seller to calculate the total cost.
The woman claimed the trader demanded ₦61,000 from her, explaining that the tops advertised for ₦700 actually cost ₦7,000 each, while the jeans advertised for ₦1,000 were priced at ₦10,000 each.
Her colleague, who had selected more items, was reportedly asked to pay ₦120,000.
Colleague confronts the trader
The woman said her colleague became angry and challenged the seller over the discrepancy between his advertised prices and the amounts he demanded after they had selected their clothes.
She quoted her colleague as saying:
“Why you go dey call useless prices? Talk the original price. Who get money go buy am!”
According to the account, the trader allegedly responded with insults rather than resolving the disagreement.
Her colleague then turned to other shoppers and passers-by to warn them about the prices she said the seller was demanding.
She reportedly shouted:
“Make una no come o! Jean na ₦10k and tops na ₦7k!”
The announcement allegedly prompted several customers who had already selected clothes to drop their items and leave the stall.
“Everybody started dropping the clothes they had selected and walking away. The thing pain the man ehn,” she stated.
The incident has sparked conversations about misleading price advertisements, transparency in retail transactions and the importance of confirming prices before making purchases.
