Charles Oputa, often known as Charly Boy, is a seasoned Nigerian entertainer and social commentator who has chastised Nigerians for what he called the normalisation of bad administration and deteriorating living circumstances in the nation.
In a video that went viral on social media, Charly Boy voiced his dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s infrastructure, electricity supplies, and food costs.
He questioned why fundamental utilities like reliable electricity and adequate roads are sometimes seen as perks rather than requirements.
“I’ve never seen a country with a higher rate of dumb citizens than Nigeria. Nigeria is a country where good roads are treated as luxury. A country where people with steady electricity are classified as the rich,” he said.
Concerned about the growing expense of food, the social media pundit questioned how prices could rise so sharply without enough public accountability.
“And a country where the price of food can jump from 10,000 to 100,000 overnight with no questions asked. And you call that a country?” he asked.
Charly Boy also questioned the role of citizens in determining the course of the nation, contending that Nigerians had an obligation to hold those in positions of authority accountable.
“Now tell me, can a nation exist without its citizens? No. Then what are the citizens doing?” he said.
He claims that while growing accustomed to the nation’s difficulties, some residents have instead concentrated on entertainment and social media material.
“Watching creators make jokes and normalising the breakdown. And watching corrupt leaders campaign only to turn out and cheer them on anyways. What a shame,” he added.
Although Charly Boy acknowledged Nigeria’s abundance of resources, he attributed the nation’s problems to what he called inadequate leadership and citizen quiet.
“What a great nation with vast resources yet trapped under poor leadership and the voiceless citizens,” he said before ending the video by telling the person filming him, “Take this camera out of my face.”
