According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday, May 2, 2026, a senior Iranian military official, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, has warned that tensions between Iran and the United States could escalate into renewed conflict, despite an ongoing pause in hostilities. His remarks followed recent diplomatic exchanges in which Washington expressed dissatisfaction with Tehran’s latest proposal submitted through Pakistan, deepening uncertainty around stalled peace negotiations.
The conflict, which began earlier in the year involving the US and Israel, has remained in a fragile ceasefire since April, with limited progress recorded after talks failed to yield agreement. Reinforcing concerns about a breakdown in diplomacy, Asadi said, “a renewed conflict between Iran and the United States is likely.” Iranian authorities maintain they are open to negotiations but reject externally imposed terms, while the US continues to push for stricter conditions, including restrictions tied to Iran’s nuclear activities.
The prolonged standoff has also intensified economic pressure, with disruptions to key oil routes and sanctions affecting trade flows. Although both sides have avoided direct confrontation in recent weeks, developments on the diplomatic front suggest that tensions remain unresolved, raising fears that the situation could deteriorate if negotiations fail to advance.
