Due to the possibility of sea mines in the main shipping channel, Iran has announced alternate routes for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued the directive, advising ships to use approved alternate entry and exit routes in order to maintain maritime safety and prevent possible mine collisions.
The development follows Tehran’s agreement to temporarily reopen the strait as part of a two-week ceasefire with the United States, which was reached just before Donald Trump’s deadline for possible military action.
Iran had effectively restricted access to the waterway since early March, disrupting global shipping and driving up energy prices.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global trade route, with around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passing through it, making any disruption or rerouting highly significant for international markets.
