According to a report by The Punch on Friday, February 27, 2026, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his request for a salary increase, insisting it is meant to improve his working conditions and not a threat to leave his position.
A leaked document recently revealed that Chelle proposed a review of his monthly pay from $50,000 to $130,000, a figure he said would cover the salaries of his technical crew. The proposal was submitted to the Nigeria Football Federation and is currently under review.
Speaking on the Histoires de Foot Podcast, Chelle dismissed claims that he issued an ultimatum or considered quitting for Olympique Marseille.
“I have never said I would leave Nigeria or threatened anyone,” he said, stressing that he still has one year left on his contract and is actively preparing for upcoming matches.
The Franco-Malian coach explained that, unlike in Europe, he personally funds his backroom staff while managing African national teams. According to him, the proposed increase would ensure better structure and efficiency.
Reports indicate that his 19 requests include improved accommodation, security, official transport, upgraded office facilities, structured access to local league matches for scouting, and defined roles in arranging friendly games.
Chelle also confirmed that his agents contacted Marseille when the coaching role became vacant but stated he had no direct discussions with the club.
Despite the controversy, Chelle remains focused on Nigeria’s next assignment, with the Super Eagles scheduled to face Iran, Jordan and Costa Rica in a four-nation tournament in Amman next month.
