Afrobeats singer Davido has generated outrage after saying that he may soon retire from music to focus on increasing his riches and making billions.
The artist made the statement after a heated conversation with Nigerian rapper Erigga on X, formerly known as Twitter, concerning musicians from wealthy and modest backgrounds.
Erigga opened the debate by praising musicians who did not come from wealthy backgrounds and had to work hard to achieve fame.
“Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn,” Erigga wrote.
However, Davido disagreed with the rapper’s perspective, claiming that being from an affluent family does not preclude an individual from working hard to attain success.
“No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top,” Davido responded.
The singer’s response appeared to challenge the widely held idea that artists from rich backgrounds have an easier route to fame than those who begin without financial assistance.

The argument later heated up, with Davido dismissing Erigga’s statement as “useless motivation” and calling him a “imbecile.”
Davido then made an unexpected statement on his future in the entertainment world, implying that he may eventually leave music behind.
“No worry o I go soon leave their music for una go make my billions… then that shit gonna be boring AF,” he wrote.
His remark received immediate notice online, especially since Davido remains one of Africa’s most popular and commercially successful music artists.
The artist has previously expanded his interests beyond music, including investments and other economic enterprises, but his latest remark raises questions about his long-term goals.
Davido concluded the conversation with a direct question regarding the realities of poverty: “Deep down, who likes poverty?”.
