“If you was a gold digger in the 1990s” — Lady tells mother how her marriage choices could have changed their lives

A Nigerian lady has triggered a discussion around marriage, financial stability and parental advice after questioning her mother’s past relationship choices and asking why she is expected to follow the same path.

In a statement shared online, the lady reflected on how her mother’s decision on who to marry may have influenced the family’s financial situation and opportunities.

She suggested that her mother, whom she described as beautiful, could have provided a more comfortable future for her children if she had married a financially stable and sensible man.

The lady also argued that her strong work ethic could have helped her achieve more if she had been raised in the United Kingdom or the United States.

Explaining her conversation with her mother, the lady said, “I was telling my mom recently that mommy if you was a gold digger in the 1990s, when you were getting married and doing free jobs do you know that we’ll probably be in the UK or US and I’ll be one of the chill chill kids cause I’m so hardworking?”

She went on to suggest that her mother’s choices had shaped the family’s situation, adding that she felt her work ethic would have taken her further in a more developed country.

The lady also questioned why her mother wanted her to make similar choices, despite the difficulties she believed her mother had faced.

Expressing her frustration, she asked her mother, “Now I’m asking her, why do you want me to do the same thing you did? Do you want me to suffer?”

Her comments touch on a common debate about whether financial security should be a key factor when choosing a life partner.

While her account reflects her personal view of her mother’s choices, it also highlights the tension that can emerge when parents’ expectations about relationships differ from their children’s aspirations.
