“If it reach your turn, abandon your mama” — Remi Surutu’s daughter fires back at online trolls

Following criticism of Nollywood actress Remi Surutu’s purported support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), her daughter has rushed to her mother’s defence.

The backlash, which followed online posts related to political campaigns, elicited responses from social media users, causing the young woman to openly address detractors and reaffirm her allegiance.

“If he reach your turn no support your mama because of online troll. I love my wura like that regardless,” she said, reacting to the wave of criticism directed at her mother.

Her remark has elicited conflicting comments, with some thanking her for supporting her parent and others arguing that public individuals must be prepared to face scrutiny, particularly when engaging in political concerns.

The development emphasises the growing confluence between entertainment and politics in Nigeria, where celebrities frequently face criticism for publicly supporting political parties or candidates.

This is not the first time Nigerian singers have received public criticism for their political allegiance.

Several Nollywood characters were called out and boycotted during the 2023 general elections because of their apparent political affinities, generating arguments over free choice and public accountability.
