“If I don’t buy it…” — Lady borrows ₦450k for aso-ebi, struggles with rent weeks later

A woman is struggling to pay her rent after borrowing ₦450,000 to buy aso-ebi for a wedding she did not intend to attend.

Her cousin, who experienced the experience, claimed he originally assumed she was joking when she said she had taken out a loan to buy the cloth.

Explaining her decision, the woman reportedly feared that neglecting to purchase the aso-ebi might alter how people in her social circle saw her.

She said, “If I don’t buy it, people will ask questions. My friends will think I’ve changed.”

Her relative was worried about her financial concerns and asked how she planned to pay her rent at the end of each month.

She responded, “Abeg, leave that one. You don’t understand how these things work.”

But after her landlord gave her seven days to finish paying her rent, the woman allegedly called him three weeks later. She just had ₦80,000 left at that point.

She allegedly acknowledged that her choice could look foolish when asked about the ₦450,000 she had borrowed, but she gave an explanation for why purchasing the cloth had felt crucial.

She said, “I know it sounds stupid, but if I had shown up without the aso-ebi, everybody would have noticed.”

Reflecting on the episode, the narrator suggested that his cousin was more concerned with seeming financially shaky in front of people she knew.

He then addressed a broader point regarding the temptation to keep up appearances and whether safeguarding one’s social image is worth spending money that one cannot afford.
