A guy has sparked outrage online after discussing a disagreement with his wife and her family about funeral expenditures for his late father-in-law.
The man’s wife’s family insisted that all sons-in-law donate ₦500,000 each, despite the dead having five biological sons.
The man claimed that his failure to comply with the stipulated amount caused difficulty in his marriage and strained relations with his in-laws.
“I told my wife I’m sorry, but it’s not my responsibility to bury her father when his own sons are alive. I offered to give what I can, but I won’t be forced to pay a fixed amount,” he said.
He added, “They called me rude and said they don’t want my money again. Since then, my wife has stopped speaking to me, and I feel like I’m being punished for standing my ground.”
The matter has stirred debate on social media, with many Nigerians holding opposing views on cultural standards surrounding burial ceremonies.
Similar disagreements have arisen in recent years, especially as mounting funeral costs and economic strains continue to erode family bonds across the country.
