“I paid N2,000 as her bride price, yet my wife refused to cook for me” – Husband tells Oyo court

Ayinla, a man, told the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, that his “talkative” wife stopped cooking for him after he paid N2,000 as her bride price.

He was brought before the court by his wife, Mosunmola, who accused him of leading a careless life.

She claimed that Ayinla routinely disregarded his domestic duties and showed little regard for her and their kids’ welfare.

She added that he lived a careless life, frequently coming home late at night after she and the kids had already gone to bed.

The plaintiff stated that their relationship was fraught with frequent quarrels, leading to several separations.

She explained that she eventually left the marriage when she could no longer endure the strain.

Mosunmola, therefore, urged the court to grant her custody of their children and to compel her husband to take responsibility for their welfare.

In his response, Ayinla agreed to the dissolution of their marriage, alleging that Mosunmola had stopped cooking for him and neglected his welfare.

He also described her as talkative, a trait he found intolerable.

The defendant further claimed that the plaintiff showed him no respect and frequently insulted him.

Mosunmola, in her testimony, said, “My husband and I never got along throughout the time we were together, which led to my decision to leave.“

“He neither paid my bride price nor fulfilled the required traditional marital rites.

“We made no meaningful progress for the eight years our union lasted.  Neither did we possess any property.

“My husband was indifferent to my welfare and that of our children.

“He was often absent and always returned home late at night after everyone had gone to bed.

“I single-handedly took care of our children’s needs and gave in-depth attention to their feeding and schooling.

“All that he knew to do was to beat me.
