A man’s claim that he was overcharged during a phone repair has gone viral. He says he spent ₦500,000 to fix an iPhone 14 Pro Max screen, which is said to cost about ₦50,000 on the open market.
He posted about the experience online, which has rekindled discussions about alleged exploitation in Nigeria’s mobile phone repair industry, especially in big cities like Lagos and Abuja where increased smartphone usage makes device repairs prevalent.
The man claimed that the event left him financially exhausted and disappointed, especially after learning the replacement part’s true market price.
His complaint has brought to light earlier conversations about consumer rights in 2022 and 2023, when comparable claims of exorbitant repair costs went viral on social media, sparking demands for regulation and openness in the IT service sector.
“I fixed my iPhone 14 Pro Max screen for ₦500,000, only to later discover the original screen costs just ₦50,000. This is the extortion VeryDarkMan is fighting against. People are being exploited because they don’t know the real prices of these parts, and technicians are taking advantage,” he said.
He went on to say that he felt mislead and emphasised the importance of raising public understanding of actual repair costs. He claims that a lot of clients become victims as a result of their lack of technical expertise and faith in service providers.
“I went in thinking I was paying a fair price, but what I later found out shocked me. This is not just my experience—many people are going through the same thing every day, and it needs to stop,” he added.
Since then, the incident has reignited discussion about pricing transparency, consumer protection, and the need for more stringent regulation of Nigeria’s unofficial tech repair business.
