“I Left Him to Marry His Mother” — Woman Opens Up About Failed Seven-Year Marriage

A Nigerian woman, Onovo Chika Sandra, has opened up about the breakdown of her seven-year marriage, alleging that constant interference from her former mother-in-law contributed significantly to the problems she experienced.

Sandra revealed that she was previously married to an Enugu-born man, while she is from Imo State. She said their marriage lasted for seven years before she eventually decided to walk away.

According to her, one of the major reasons for leaving was her former husband’s close relationship with his mother and his alleged tendency to follow her instructions.

“I Left Him to Marry His Mother”

In a Facebook post shared on Friday, August 14, 2026, Sandra explained that she still bears her former husband’s surname, Onovo, on some of her official documents and has been trying to have it removed.

She described her former husband as a “mummy’s boy”, alleging that he did whatever his mother asked him to do.

Sandra said the situation became so difficult that she felt she had no option but to leave the marriage, sarcastically saying she left him to “marry his mother.”

Sandra Reflects on Her Marriage

Looking back on the failed marriage, Sandra admitted that she was younger at the time and believes her level of emotional maturity influenced some of the decisions she made.

She suggested that she would not tolerate the same situation today, saying she has learned important lessons from the experience.

The woman also emphasized the importance of achieving mental and emotional maturity before entering marriage, noting that people should be adequately prepared for the realities and responsibilities that come with marriage.

Promises to Reveal More Details

Sandra disclosed that there are more details about her experience that she has yet to share publicly.

However, she said she would only discuss them when she feels emotionally ready to revisit the events surrounding her marriage.

Her revelation has sparked conversations online about marital boundaries, interference from in-laws, emotional maturity, and the influence parents can have on their children’s marriages.
