Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has opened up about the reason she kept her marriage largely private, revealing that her fear and uncertainty about marriage influenced her decision.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast, Kadiri said she had a “phobia of marriage” and was constantly worried about whether her union would work out.
According to the actress, her fear of the unknown made her cautious about making her marriage public, particularly during the early stages of the relationship.
She explained that she deliberately kept details of her marriage away from the public because she did not want unnecessary attention or drama surrounding her relationship.
Kadiri added that her husband, Mr Ezerika, understood and supported her decision. The couple subsequently opted for a small wedding ceremony attended by only about 50 people.
She said:
“I had a phobia of marriage. I was battling with the fear of the unknown and asking myself, ‘Am I going to make this decision and everything will now scatter?’ So, I wasn’t really ready to have a public marriage, and my husband was okay with it.
“Also, I didn’t want a lot of drama regarding my relationship. That’s why my husband and I invited only 50 people to our wedding. Twenty-five people were invited by him, while 25 others were invited by me. If I were abroad, I guess we would have just probably walked to the registry and gotten married,” she said.
Kadiri and Ezerika got married in a private ceremony in November 2018. The couple welcomed their first daughter in August 2019 and their second daughter in July 2022.
