After speaking openly about pregnancy, childbirth, and why mothers should receive the greatest care and attention, Nigerian singer Simi—who is married to fellow artist Adekunle Gold—started heated discussions on social media.
The singer, who recently gave birth, asked why some men lament that no one inquires about fathers during pregnancy or childbirth.
“Some men will say, why is it that when a woman is pregnant or she’s giving birth, nobody asks after the daddy? It’s on sight. Are you listening? How is the daddy? What happened to the daddy?” she said.
Simi emphasized that childbirth is not a time for comparison, drawing on her personal experience.
“Oh, I haven’t slept in 24 hours, I haven’t slept in 48 hours… so what? That moment is not your moment, okay? Did your vagina tear? Did they have to sew you? Did they have to stitch you back together?” she asked, stressing that a woman’s body goes through irreversible changes during delivery.
The singer further explained the physical sacrifices involved in carrying a child. “Have you been growing a human being in your body, with nutrients depleting from your body every day? Have you been swelling on and off? And that’s an easy pregnancy,” she said.
Simi also pointed out that many women endure months of nausea, medical difficulties, and discomfort, noting that pregnancy typically comes with a long list of prospective threats to a woman’s life.
Simi dismissed the repeated question of concern for fathers during childbirth. She asked “Have you risked your life? Have you had multiple children? Stop asking how’s the daddy? How is the daddy?”
