Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly ambushed a vehicle conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, abd¥cting several mourners travelling with the body to his hometown in Otukpo, Benue State.
The attack occurred at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, along the Ochadamu-Ejule Road in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The late FRSC officer was said to have passed away in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, after a brief illness.
Reports indicate that the k!dnappers have contacted the family and are demanding ₦450 million for the release of those held captive.
Confirming the incident, Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Lawal Fagge, disclosed that nine mourners, including two FRSC personnel, were abd¥cted during the att@ck.
He explained that the body of the deceased officer was later found abandoned near Ejule Community and was subsequently recovered and handed over to the family for burial, while security agencies continue efforts to rescue the k!dnapped victims.
“We recovered the corpse of the officer in Ejule community on Friday after frantic searching and handed it over to the family. He was buried on Saturday in his home town at Otukpo in Benue.
“The abd¥ctors used the cellphone of the deceased officer, and called his wife, demanding huge sum of money for those in their captivity to regain their freedom,” Fagge said.
Security personnel, including the Nigerian Army, the police, local hunters, and vigilante groups, have reportedly been deployed to the area in a bid to rescue the victims and track down those responsible for the att@ck.
The incident has sparked outrage among many Nigerians, with several people expressing concern that the att@ckers showed no regard even for the d3ad.
