“He’s in the hospital” – Sowore makes fresh claim over Tinubu’s absence, calls for impeachment

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is currently in the hospital, amid controversy over the President’s extended stay in Europe.

Sowore made the claim to journalists on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where his party has filed a lawsuit against Tinubu, the National Assembly, and other government officials for his absence from Nigeria.

“I know where President Tinubu is, he’s in the hospital. I guess when he’s discharged, he’ll return,” Sowore stated.

The AAC has questioned Tinubu’s failure to submit a written declaration to the National Assembly regarding his extended absence, as well as the National Assembly’s failure to authorize Vise President Kashim Shettima to perform the functions of Acting President after the specified time period.

The suit, filed by AAC National Legal Adviser Inibehe Effiong, seeks to determine whether Tinubu complied with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution.

Additionally, Sowore revealed that the party wants the National Assembly to start the process of impeaching the President.

“But we have taken a position in our party to sue him, and the National Assembly to commence his impeachment. And we’re filing the case today, right at the Federal High Court here,” he added.

In the examined reports, the hospitalization claim has not been independently verified. The Presidency has described Tinubu’s trip as a working vacation and insisted that he is still in charge of government affairs while he is overseas.

At the time of reporting, there was no scheduled hearing date for the AAC lawsuit, which was filed on September 28 2026.
