President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has acknowledged the growing suffering caused by increased fuel costs, but urged Nigerians to have hope.
The President made the comments on Friday during a visit to Bayelsa State, where he launched various projects and addressed worries about the country’s economic position.
“I hear you from various angles of the economy. The fuel price is biting hard, but look around. Let us just thank God together that you are better off,” Tinubu said.
He also likened Nigeria’s predicament to that of other African countries, pointing out that the country’s current issues are not unique.
“Listen to them in Kenya and other African countries, what they are going through. We will not look back. We will continue to find ways to ameliorate the suffering of the vulnerable. This is a government that cares,” he added.
Tinubu also remarked that the government is working to reduce the burden on residents, blaming the economic downturn on global forces affecting interrelated economies.
“The challenge is from a war we did not call for, but the effects of the interrelated world that we share. Both the joy and pain of it are universal,” he concluded.
Since taking office in May 2023, the administration has implemented significant economic reforms, like as the elimination of gasoline subsidies and the flotation of the naira.
While these policies are intended to provide long-term stability, they have resulted in rising inflation and higher living costs, leaving many Nigerians struggling to cope.
