“Forwarding WhatsApp chats without consent can land you in prison” – Lawyer warns

A Nigerian lawyer has generated outrage online after warning citizens about the possible legal ramifications of revealing private chats without permission.

According to the lawyer, the first person to be imprisoned in 2026 was sentenced for forwarding a WhatsApp discussion with a friend in 2025.

“You cannot forward or share someone else’s private conversation with a third party without their consent. Just because the conversation is on your phone does not mean you have the exclusive right to share it. Every conversation is legally protected, “he explained.

He emphasised that the law does not live solely in courtrooms or law books. It has an impact on daily life, including private conversations on WhatsApp, email, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and other sites.

Forwarding someone else’s mails without their permission violates privacy and may constitute unlawful personal data processing.

The lawyer warned Nigerians to exercise caution when screenshotting, forwarding, or sharing private correspondence with their pals.

Such actions may have serious legal ramifications if they are not shared legitimately and for legitimate purposes.

The warning triggered extensive debate online, with many people reconsidering their own sharing practices.
