Football heritage pays last respect to legendary Italy defender Franco Baresi

Football greats joined relatives, friends, and supporters to pay their last respects to AC Milan and Italy veteran Franco Baresi on Tuesday, drawing thousands of mourners to Milan.

The famous Sant’Ambrogio Basilica in central Milan hosted a funeral service for the former defender, who passed away last week at the age of 66 after a period of poor health.

In an emotional tribute to one of the club’s best captains ever, supporters packed the streets surrounding the cathedral wearing AC Milan colours and holding scarves and shirts bearing Baresi’s iconic No. 6.

To honour Baresi’s life and incredible career, a number of football’s biggest names attended the burial.

Alongside Italian hero Roberto Baggio, there were AC Milan icons Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten, Clarence Seedorf, Alessandro Costacurta, and Dida.

Christian Pulisic, an American international who is still on summer vacation following the World Cup, also travelled to the service.

Prior to Wednesday’s preseason friendly against Inter Milan in Australia, AC Milan has revealed preparations to pay a special tribute to Baresi.

In an emotional statement following Baresi’s passing, AC Milan described the club legend as a symbol of the Rossoneri’s identity and heart.

“Announcing the loss of someone who embodied the heart and soul of AC Milan is incredibly difficult.

The club added: “In memory of Franco, we stand united, knowing he’ll guide and push us throughout our Rossoneri journey. Forever. Because Baresi is forever.”

During one of the most prosperous periods in AC Milan’s history, Baresi won three European Cups and six Serie A titles during his whole professional career.

He also had a stellar international career with Italy, as he helped the Azzurri win the FIFA World Cup in 1982 and became one of the best defenders in history.

In addition to his on-field accomplishments, players, teams, and supporters are honouring his leadership, loyalty, and enduring impact on Italian football. His passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from all throughout the football globe.
