FG unveils policy to cut education costs with reusable textbook, uniform calendar

The federal government has created a comprehensive policy framework aiming at lowering educational costs for parents while improving student learning outcomes.

The strategy was unveiled on Friday by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, and his deputy, Suwaiba Ahmed.

According to the ministers, the framework is part of a larger reform package aimed at easing the financial burden on families and repositioning Nigeria’s education sector.

The policy emphasises the use of reusable, high-quality textbooks that can last four to six years. The new framework will prohibit the use of throwaway workbooks associated with textbooks.

This will allow textbooks to be reused beyond academic sessions and shared by siblings, reducing ongoing education costs while also supporting environmental sustainability.

The proposal also establishes a national academic schedule and streamlines graduation ceremonies, limiting them to Primary Six, JSS 3, and SS 3.

It also improves assessment processes, quality assurance, and the selection of instructional materials. It also addresses the issue of periodic cosmetic textbook updates, which require parents to make yearly purchases.

Moving forward, textbook modifications must reflect significant content advances rather than modest layout or style adjustments.

The ministers underlined the federal government’s commitment to upholding educational standards, increasing equity, lowering parent expenses, and ensuring universal access to high-quality instructional resources.

They also recognised the work of organisations like the Universal Basic Education Commission and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council in designing the framework.
