FG commends Funke Akindele after box office milestone

Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele has received praise from the Federal Government for her most recent film, Behind the Scenes, which broke box office records.

The accomplishment, according to the National Orientation Agency (NOA), is evidence of Nigerian cinema’s growing international prominence and a significant boost to the nation’s creative sector.

Behind the Scenes is the first Nollywood film to reach ₦2 billion, having just made over ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office.

With nearly $111,000 in Canada and $190,000 in North America, the film has also done well elsewhere.

The NOA praised Akindele’s achievement, saying, “From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas — this movie had everyone locked in.”

The agency also noted that Akindele is now the first director to have three years in a row at the top of the African box office.

Nigerian storytelling has become increasingly popular worldwide, as evidenced by the 2025 release’s dominance of both domestic and foreign markets.

The film’s reception, according to sources, shows that Nollywood productions are drawing a wide range of viewers and solidifying their position on the global film scene.

Considered a pioneer in Nigerian entertainment, Funke Akindele keeps pushing the envelope with her creative narrative and high-caliber productions.

Nigeria’s creative and cultural industries are pleased of Behind the Scenes’ success.

Following widespread praise from both critics and moviegoers, the government’s backing solidified Akindele’s standing as one of Africa’s most prosperous filmmakers.
