According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, January 30, 2026, in a case involving allegations of cyberbullying against Mercy Johnson-Okojie, another actress from Nollywood, Angela Okorie was granted bail of N5 million with one surety of equivalent value on Friday by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
While the prosecution did object to Okorie’s bail application, Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that there was insufficient evidence to indicate that the defendant would flee if released on bond.
Earnest Nwoye was Okorie’s lawyer. To that end, Justice Nwite stated, “therefore, I am inclined to grant the bail in the interest of justice,” stressing the need of exercising discretion fairly and judicially.
As part of the surety’s requirements, the judge requested that they submit an affidavit of means, evidence of being a level 13 civil servant, and copies of their appointment and promotion letters.
The court registrar must confirm the surety’s residence, and Okorie and the surety are also need to submit two passport photographs.
Okorie pleaded not guilty on all seven counts of cyberstalking and criminal defamation, which were brought against her at her re-arraignment under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015. Vicky Okoye, who was representing the police, asked for a trial date so they could submit evidence.
Some crimes entail sentences of three to ten years in prison.
According to her counsel, the defendant had actually told the authorities about her medical vacation, disproving the accusation that she had absconded.
The prosecution’s arguments against bail, according to Nwoye, “amount to persecution, my lord,” since they violate the constitution’s Section 36(6b).
In order to verify the bail terms, Justice Nwite ordered Okorie’s custody at Suleja Correctional Centre and postponed the trial until March 23.
Mercy Johnson-Okojie’s lawyer had previously petitioned for the charges, claiming that Okorie and the now-at-large Ifeoma Mbonu had published defamatory social media posts about Johnson-Okojie, calling her a “blood-sucking demon,” with the intent to harm her reputation, provoke public hostility, and harass the actress.
