FCT council poll: “I will back only candidates that support Tinubu” – Wike declares

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he will only support candidates who share President Bola Tinubu’s agenda ahead of the FCT area councils election.

Wike made the statement on Saturday night, February 14, 2026, during Senator Sandy Onor’s 60th birthday party in Abuja, which recognised six decades of leadership, service, and impact.

“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win.

It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand,” Wike said.

The minister stressed that his support is not restricted by political party affiliation; his focus, he added, is solely on candidates who share the president’s goals and policies for the FCT.

Wike’s stance comes as the councillorship and chairmanship elections for the FCT’s six area councils approach, with voting set for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

Several major parties are competing, and voters are poised to select municipal leaders who will supervise community services and growth.

As the FCT Area Council election approaches, Wike’s remark is expected to reignite debates over political influence, loyalty, and the role of federal authorities in local elections.
