In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Aisha Yesufu, activist and political commentator, reacted to comments attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Jingir concerning Christians and the description of Christians within Islam.
Speaking during the interview, Yesufu stated, “Even in Islam, Christians are not called infidels; they are called people of the book” She made the remark while responding to Sheikh Jingir’s comments and explaining her understanding of Islamic teachings regarding Christians.
According to Yesufu, Christians have a recognised place within Islamic teachings as People of the Book. She argued that describing Christians simply as infidels could create misconceptions about how Islam views followers of Christianity.
The activist maintained that religious leaders should be careful when making public statements about other faiths, particularly in Nigeria, where Christians and Muslims form major religious communities.
Yesufu also argued that religious differences should not be used to create unnecessary divisions among Nigerians. She suggested that people should seek a proper understanding of religious teachings before making claims about another faith.
She further emphasized the importance of responsible communication by religious leaders, noting that their statements can influence how their followers perceive members of other religious communities.
She concluded by reiterating her position that Christians are regarded as People of the Book in Islam and called for greater religious understanding, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
