EPL: Haaland late penalty lifts Man City past Liverpool in chaotic finish

Erling Haaland scored a stoppage-time penalty as Manchester City recovered from behind to defeat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, reviving the Premier League title battle.

The thrilling result reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top of the league to six points with 13 games remaining, while City moved into second position with a rare success on Merseyside.

Liverpool took the lead in the 74th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai struck a fantastic free-kick past Gianluigi Donnarumma following a tight and mainly cagey game.

City replied impressively, drawing level six minutes later when Bernardo Silva scored from close range following relentless pressure in the Liverpool penalty area.

The pivotal moment occurred deep into stoppage time. Matheus Nunes was brought down within the area by goalkeeper Alisson, and referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty.

Haaland stepped up and easily converted in the 93rd minute, scoring his 21st Premier League goal this season.

Liverpool almost equalised shortly later, but Donnarumma made an excellent save to deny Alexis MacAllister.

City then believed they had added a third when Rayan Cherki scored from inside his own half, leaving Alisson out of position.

However, VAR intervened and ruled the goal out after Szoboszlai was fined and sent off for a tackle on Haaland earlier in the action, awarding City a free kick instead.

Despite the late dispute, City held on for a historic victory, their first league win at Anfield since 2021 and their first in front of the fans since 2003.

The result keeps Guardiola’s team firmly in title contention, but Liverpool was left to rue a dramatic late collapse after appearing to be on track for a critical home win.
