“Disrespect, Nagging and Ungratefulness Cost Me My Marriage” — Woman Shares Three Mistakes 14 Years After Divorce

A Nigerian woman has sparked conversations online after reflecting on three mistakes she believes contributed to the breakdown of her marriage 14 years ago, urging other women to learn from her experience.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, identified disrespect, nagging and ungratefulness as the major issues that affected her relationship with her former husband.

In a video circulating on social media, she admitted that she was young and immature at the time and often failed to appreciate her husband’s efforts and financial support.

She also recalled correcting him in public, frequently checking his phone and showing little enthusiasm when he bought her gifts or sent her money.

1. Disrespecting Her Husband

Speaking about the first mistake, the woman described disrespect as one of the major problems in her marriage.

She admitted that her educational background sometimes made her feel entitled to correct her husband, even in public.

In her words:

“See, disrespect is a big deal for men. My man go talk one and I talk three because I’m a graduate. I just came out of university that time, body dey pepper me then. The man talk English, I correct him.”

She advised women to avoid embarrassing their partners in public, arguing that disagreements should be handled privately and respectfully.

She further claimed that men value their ego and may feel disrespected when their partners constantly correct them in front of others.

2. Nagging and Constant Suspicion

The woman identified nagging as her second mistake, explaining that she often interpreted her husband’s silence or mood changes as signs that another woman might be involved.

According to her, she failed to understand that men could also experience personal, financial and business challenges that had nothing to do with infidelity.

She recalled repeatedly questioning her husband about different women whenever he appeared quiet or withdrawn.

She said:

“It’s not everything that’s about a woman, and this is one thing. We are the ones who have made our husbands go out and be drinking and be indulging.”

She also suggested that constantly questioning her husband and suspecting him of cheating pushed him away from the marriage.

The woman further disclosed that her former husband lived abroad and that she regularly checked his phone whenever he returned.

Advising women against the habit, she said:

“Ladies, stop checking men’s phones. Stop it. Stop it. You will be checking his phone and checking and checking.”

She argued that a partner’s decision to keep certain conversations private does not automatically mean they are being unfaithful.

3. Ungratefulness Towards Her Husband

The third mistake she identified was her inability to appreciate the things her husband did for her.

Recounting their early relationship, she said she came from a poor background and met the man in August. By November, he had bought her a car as a birthday present.

However, she admitted that her reaction was largely limited to a simple thank-you, without showing the level of appreciation she now believes the gesture deserved.

She also recalled that her husband sometimes sent her money through MoneyGram, but she would merely call to confirm that she had received it.

In her words:

“Sometimes, he will be the one to call me and say, have you seen the money? That’s rubbish.”

She further admitted that although her husband bought her a Toyota Corolla, she was more interested in getting a bigger vehicle, such as an SUV or Jeep.

Reflecting on her attitude, she said:

“Ungratefulness makes man keep on feeling that he wasn’t doing enough. Eventually, he told me, see, listen, okay? I’ve gotten you a car. I will be like, it was a one-door Corolla, but the truth is that it was okay for me, a university graduate, a small girl at that time, but I dey eye something bigger.”

Her Advice to Married Women

Concluding her account, the woman urged women to appreciate partners who make genuine efforts to support and care for them.

She encouraged women to demonstrate respect and gratitude rather than constantly focusing on what their partners have not provided.

“If today, you have a man, a good man who is doing one or two for you, please respect him. You respect him. Otherwise, you will only have your eyes to cry. When they give you something as a lady, you will say, ‘Thank you, sir. God bless you,’” she advised.

Her revelation has generated conversations about communication, appreciation, trust and mutual respect in marriage, with discussions also emerging about the responsibilities of both partners in maintaining a healthy relationship.
