The sister of Mene Ogidi, the 28-year-old man purportedly slain during a police operation in Effurun, Delta State, has given an emotional account of what happened before and after the unfortunate incident.
Her report comes amid mounting outrage over the shooting, which has sparked comments on social media.
The devastated sister spoke about the events leading up to her brother’s death, stating that the incident occurred on a Sunday after Mene informed the family that he was going to collect a waybill for a friend.
She said: “The day the thing happen — na Sunday. When he wan comot from house, he tell me say he wan go collect waybill. He say one of him friends for Sapele ask am make he help am pick am.”
She also revealed that her brother complained about problems with his phone before leaving the house.
“He come talk say him phone get issue, so make my mama give am her phone make he use am. My mama give am the phone, he come put card. After that, he call the friend with my mama phone, and the person send am money for transport to go the place,” she stated.
The victim’s sister stated the family became concerned after not hearing from him.
She added that she had tried several times to contact him using the same phone number as the buddy but was unsuccessful.
“Hin kor take leave house. After some time, we no hear from am again.
“I begin call the number wey he use call the friend, but nobody pick.”
According to her, the family later learned that police had shot someone in the area.
She stated that they hurried to the site, only to discover that the victim was her brother.
“Later, people come tell us say police shoot person for that area. We rush go there. When we reach, we see say na my brother. He don already… them don kill am.”
The grieving sister also denied claims that her brother possessed a firearm.
She said: “Them say dem find gun inside the car wey he enter, but my brother no get any gun. Na just to go collect waybill he dey go.”
She further said that officers blocked family members from getting close to the body before carrying it away.
The lady also stated that the viral video was the only way the family discovered what had transpired.
“The police no even allow us go near the body well. Them just carry am go like that.
“If to say nobody video am, we for no even know wetin really happen. We for still dey find am till today.”
