Following the death of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, lodged a legal notice on a private hospital in Lagos.

The couple accused Euracare Hospital, its anesthesiologist, and accompanying medical staff of medical negligence and violation of duty of care in the notice dated January 10 and issued by the law office of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kemi Pinheiro.

As part of preparations for a scheduled medical evacuation to the United States, the toddler underwent a number of procedures, including an echocardiography, brain MRI, lumbar puncture, and the installation of a central line, before passing away in the early hours of January 7, 2025.

The family claimed that after the child was sedated and moved around the hospital, issues arose. They cited inadequate oxygen support, poor monitoring, incorrect medication administration, a lack of medical staff, a delayed reaction to distress, and worries about informed consent and resuscitation tools.

They have warned against destroying any evidence and formally demanded certified copies of all medical records pertaining to their son’s care within seven days.

Although Euracare Hospital has not publicly addressed the legal notification, it had previously denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the child was very ill when they arrived and that all medical procedures were followed.

In addition, the hospital claimed it had started an internal investigation and offered the family its condolences.
