Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, a controversial Nigerian pastor, sparked online debate by portraying Christianity as a “social construct” foisted on Africans during colonial times.
In a viral video, Adegboyega claimed that colonialists marketed Christianity as the best religion for controlling and subduing African populations.
“The white man came to Africa and told us he was sending a bigger religion,” he said, alleging that biblical teachings on obedience and masters were manipulated to justify oppression.
The pastor also associated the transatlantic slave trade with the use of Christianity as a tool for domination.
Adegboyega also challenged dogmatic religious institutions, citing laws concerning marriage and social behaviour that he argues were established throughout time and not clearly specified in the Bible.
He urged African youth to prioritise spirituality above religion, promoting self-awareness, questioning, and intelligence as pathways to empowerment rather than blind obedience.
The pastor recommended churches to prioritise transparency and education for their members rather than restricting access to leadership or church resources.
His comments have divided internet audiences, with some praising Christianity’s empowering qualities and others doubting the objectives of religious institutions.
Adegboyega also reflected on his personal journey, admitting to former engagement in a fraternity and vices before relocating to the United Kingdom, where he now devotes himself entirely to spiritual leadership.
