Army raises alarm over low South-east recruitment

Anambra State received only 117 applications out of 38,000 countrywide, according to a senior army commander.

Uche Nnabuihe, a brigadier-general, has expressed worry about the poor enlistment of South-east citizens in the Nigerian army, noting that Anambra State received only 117 applications out of 38,000 countrywide.

Mr Nnabuihe led an army delegation to sensitise youngsters in Awka, adding that the figure was recorded on April 7th, before a statewide awareness campaign began.

He stated that the initiative sought to encourage more youngsters from Anambra and the South-east to apply for the 91 Regular Recruits Intake before the May 27 2026 deadline.

“We observed with concern that out of 38,000 applications received nationwide, only 117 came from Anambra as of 7 April 2026

“This sensitisation is to correct that imbalance and  our youths to take advantage of opportunities in the Nigerian Army,” he said.

Mr Nnabuihe encouraged eligible young people to apply, stressing that the army provides a defined professional path and possibilities for national service.

Another army official, Ogbemudia Osawe, stated that training infrastructure has grown, with new facilities in Abakaliki and Osogbo to accommodate new recruits.

Mr. Osawe, a lieutenant-colonel, outlined the advantages of entering the army, which included professional advancement, regular salary, ongoing military education, specialised training, and exposure to different cultures.

He also mentioned that personnel receive welfare packages, free medical care for families, pensions, gratuities, and opportunities for international assignments.
