A Nigerian Muslim woman has generated outrage online after revealing how she felt marginalised by her Imam after years of dedication and duty at the mosque.
She claims that she is always the one who cleans the mosque, including the restrooms and floors.
She claimed that the task was so stressful that she would occasionally become ill, but she kept telling herself that she was doing Allah’s work.
Read what she said below;
“I fall sick sometimes because of how stressful it is. I will see pee and clean it, telling myself I am doing the Lord’s work. The day they said they wanted to select Iya Adini (mosque leader), I relaxed because I knew I deserved it.
I even thought my sister in Saudi would send me abaya for the ceremony. But they called names of Alhajas that sell clothes in Lagos Island. These people don’t even come to mosque regularly.”
She claimed that when she asked what job she would be assigned, she was informed she would be the one to carry the offering box and collect money during service.
The comment made her wonder whether poor and committed members are merely viewed as labourers rather than leaders.
The lady contended that many of those chosen rarely attend prayers and may not even be able to read the Qur’an correctly, yet they were deemed more fit due to their rank.
Her narrative has sparked debate, with many questioning whether religious beliefs should be based on riches and status or commitment and service.
Others encouraged her not to give up, reminding her that true recompense comes from God, not man.
