In advance of the knockout round, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will receive a $10,000 extra for each goal they score against Mozambique in their Africa Cup of Nations round-of-16 match.
The incentive package, which is worth almost ₦14 million per goal, is applicable to the match on Monday at the Fez Stadium in Morocco.
A Nigerian businessman who is also a partner of the national team is funding the incentive, which maintains the awards system that was established earlier in the competition.
With eight goals in three Group C games, Nigeria is among the most prolific teams in the group stage going into the knockout round. They are in confident attacking form.
The same partner gave the Super Eagles $5,000 for each goal they scored during the competition’s opening round.
As the stakes increase in the knockout stages, that number has now doubled, indicating a conscious effort to inspire the team as the competition gets more intense.
Speaking to reporters in Rabat, Mallam Shehu Dikko, head of the National Sports Commission, acknowledged the agreement, emphasising that financial incentives are a component of a larger support system, according to ThisDay.
Dikko declared, “We have fully mobilised the Super Eagles to succeed in this tournament.” “On November 14, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the AFCON Intervention Fund on behalf of the Federal Government.”
Government support has been supplemented by private sector support, he continued. “In addition, our partners and sponsors paid $5,000 per goal in the group stage and have now committed $10,000 per goal for the Round of 16. The incentives will continue to improve as the tournament progresses.”
The Super Eagles’ technical staff has continuously downplayed distractions, maintaining that performance and results remain the top priorities as Nigeria pursues a spot in the quarterfinals, even as the bonuses highlight rising confidence in the team’s prospects.
The match against Mozambique is a pivotal test; a win would ensure Nigeria’s advancement, while a loss would terminate their season.
The Super Eagles have been under pressure to at least make it to the competition’s later stages because they are one of the tournament favourites. Nigeria will try to turn goals into cash prizes on Monday at 8:00 p.m. in Fes.
