Adamawa Governor Fintiri dumps PDP, defects to APC

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fintiri made the news on a statewide broadcast on Friday, stating that he, his cabinet, and other PDP officials in Adamawa State have joined the APC.

His defection considerably strengthens the APC’s dominance, as he becomes the 30th serving governor to join the ruling party in Nigeria’s political scene, bolstering the APC’s authority over the majority of the country’s states.

The action comes after weeks of speculation, which began when numerous Adamawa State House of Assembly members resigned from the PDP earlier this week due to internal party conflicts.

Fintiri’s decision follows a broader trend of high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, with additional governors from Taraba, Kano, and Plateau states joining the ruling party in recent months.

Political observers believe the development might have far-reaching consequences for both state and national politics, as party fortunes shift ahead of next elections.
