A landlord is suing actor and comedian Kenan Thompson, claiming he violated a lease on a Los Angeles rental property and owes him over $34,000.
The lawsuit claims that the Saturday Night Live star violated a 12-month lease on a three-bedroom property that was allegedly signed in September. The tenancy was supposed to start on October 1. According to the landlord, Thompson committed to paying $10,250 in rent each month for a year, after which the lease would become month-to-month.
Thompson owes $17,425 in unpaid rent for the months of November and December, according to the landlord, who claims that Thompson violated the terms of the lease. The lawsuit also asserts that Thompson is liable for a $15,750 difference over the initial lease term because a replacement tenant could only be found at a lower rent.
After deducting Thompson’s $10,250 security deposit, the total amount sought is $34,390. Other claims include a $871 late fee, a $9,594 broker fee, and $1,000 in legal fees.
However, sources close to Thompson dispute the allegations, saying the issue is a contractual disagreement rather than unpaid rent. According to the sources, Thompson never received the keys to the property and never stepped foot inside the home.
Thompson’s representatives have not yet responded publicly to the lawsuit.
