A woman has shared a heartbreaking account of how a stranger in the crowd shielded her from gunfire and died during the 2020 EndSARS protest.
In a video circulating online, she recalled that an ex-military man had told protesters to bring out Nigerian and army flags, sit down, and sing the national anthem.
She said that as they were following the instruction, gunshots suddenly rang out, sending people running, with several falling as they tried to escape.
The woman, who said she was still holding a microphone on stage at the time, recalled being singled out by soldiers as the shooting continued.
According to her, a man who had been sitting among the protesters suddenly stood up, grabbed her, and used his body to shield her from the bullets.
She said the stranger took the bullets meant for her and lost his life in the process.
The woman described the incident as a terrifying experience, saying she was so overwhelmed that she could not make sense of what was happening around her.
She also recalled that some protesters urged others not to run, believing they could confront the soldiers once their ammunition ran out, even as the gunfire continued.
