“A man can lock his phone, but his wife should not try it” — Man sparks outrage

A guy has sparked a heated argument on social media by stating that, while males have the right to lock their phones, married women do not.

His remarks, which mentioned religion, culture, and bride price, sparked significant outrage and reignited debates about privacy and control in marriage.

In a viral statement, the man claimed that a wife must be entirely available to her husband because the Bible states that a woman was formed from man.

Every man has the right to lock his phone, but his wife doesn’t have the right to lock hers,” he said.

He further said that paying the bride price and welcoming a woman into his home gives him the right to demand complete transparency from her.

The man presented his arguments as both scriptural and cultural, claiming that marriage violates a woman’s right to personal solitude.

He argued that transparency is an obligation, not a choice, for wives, although men are excluded from the same expectation.

Critics contend that his approach misrepresents religious precepts and encourages unequal power dynamics in marriage.

The comments generated an immediate backlash online, with many Nigerians criticising them as sexist and rude.

Women’s rights advocates interpreted the statement as an attempt to justify control and surveillance in marriage.

Some people also questioned why transparency should be limited to one person when trust is truly reciprocal.

Others contended that privacy did not imply secrecy, and that healthy marriages necessitate respect for limits on both sides.

As the debate continues, the incident has highlighted long-standing issues about gender roles, religion, and autonomy in modern partnerships, with many pushing for more balanced and fair views of marriage.
