Lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has criticised podcast host Jima Emmanuel over her recent remarks about dating and financial expectations in relationships.
Jima had stated during a podcast that she could never be in a relationship with a financially unstable man, insisting that a poor man has no place in her heart.
Explaining her standards, she said:
“I will tell you, a poor man has no place in my heart. I don’t want to suffer someone’s son. It is not me that will drain you… because I am that kind of girl that if you give me ₦1 million, the next day I want ₦2 million, the next day I want ₦3 million, I want ₦4 million. I am never satisfied… So I want to be with a man that I know is financially stable.
If you know you are a man and you watch this and you say this girl is chatting nonsense, go and work! Go and have money! Go and make money! Your mates are spending your house rent on food. Please don’t tell me rubbish. Me, I like money. Even in my dream, I like money. A p00r man has no place in my heart, period.”
Reacting via his X account, Adeyanju condemned the comments, arguing that they reflected deeper societal issues.
He wrote:
“Failed nation, failed parenting, lack of home or community training, lack of self-esteem, inferiority complex, etc responsible for this kind of crash-out. To get to this point in life where you don’t see yourself beyond a parasite, you must have done everything in life & nothing is working. And this is one of the major reasons relationships and marriages are failing.”
The exchange has since sparked widespread debate online, with social media users expressing mixed opinions on financial expectations, self-worth and the role of money in relationships.
