“You’re backsliding”: Man shares mother’s response over non-payment of tithes

A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom has sparked a family debate after he stopped sending tithes to his home church, citing differences in religious practices abroad.
In a candid message shared online, he explained that while he consistently paid his monthly tithe in Nigeria, his contributions decreased significantly after relocating to the UK.
“When I got here, I sent tithe to my home church about twice, then stopped,” he stated.
He revealed that his mother called to question his decision. In response, he pointed out that in the UK, tithing is not mandatory and many churches treat giving as a voluntary act. He also noted that numerous churches offer practical support, such as providing free meals every Sunday for those in need.
Reflecting on his experience in Nigeria, he questioned the impact of his past tithes: “All the tithe we paid in church in Nigeria — where did it go?
“There was never a time we had food for the poor or a room where food was kept. Isn’t that the essence of tithe?”
His mother’s reaction was blunt: “You are backsliding.”
The exchange has sparked online discussions about the purpose of tithing, cultural differences in church practices, and how faith evolves when people move abroad.
