In Ogun State, a middle-aged woman by the name of Mama Dada killed herself by hanging because she was unable to pay back a N70,000 loan from the microfinance institution LAPO.

On Saturday afternoon, February 18, 2023, the woman allegedly lit herself on fire in her rented residence in Abeokuta’s Oke-Keesi, Itoko neighbourhood.
Bolanle Ajayi, an eyewitness and local resident, told PUNCH that the woman committed herself because she was unable to repay a debt she had obtained from LAPO.
She said, “I was told she got the loan amounting to N70,000.”
The deceased was in debt to the bank, according to Ade Babawale, secretary of the local Community Development Association.
“She is owing the ‘Gbomu le lantern’ the sum of N70,000, because she was unable to meet up with the payment she then sent her last born to buy fuel and also use style to discharge the small boy and she locks herself up inside the room and wet everywhere with petrol including herself and set the whole place on fire.” he said.
Her corpse has been deposited at the state General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
