“When my husband is d√unk he b3ats me mercilessly from 9:00 pm till 5:00 am” – Divorce-seeking woman tells Oyo court

The Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce case filed by a woman, Eluronke, against her husband, Ayomipo, whom she accused of excessive dr!nking and d0mestic vi0lence.

Eluronke told the court that her husband repeatedly embarrassed her throughout their marriage and had a habit of consuming large amounts of alc0hol daily until he became intoxicated.

According to her, Ayomipo often defended his dr!nking by claiming it helped him sleep better and prevented him from overthinking or becoming depressed.

She, however, alleged that whenever he became d√unk, he turned vi0lent and disruptive, leading to frequent conflicts between them.

The plaintiff further stated that their constant quarrels made them a source of concern to neighbours and co-tenants, particularly because many of the disputes occurred late at night and disturbed other residents.

She recounted one incident in which Ayomipo allegedly returned home intoxicated and engaged in a confrontation with her that lasted from about 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. the following morning.

Following the incident, Eluronke said she moved out of their matrimonial home and began living separately. However, she claimed that her husband continued to ha√ass her by visiting her new residence, causing disturbances, and publicly embarrassing her.

She asked the court to grant her custody of their only child, stating that she would be able to provide proper care and guidance. She also requested that the court direct Ayomipo to take responsibility for the child’s feeding, education, and healthcare expenses.

In addition, she urged the court to order the defendant to pay ₦70,000 monthly for the child’s upkeep.

Ayomipo was absent from court despite reportedly being served with a summons.

While giving evidence, Eluronke stated that they contracted a traditional marriage in 2020 after her bride price was paid, and thereafter lived together as husband and wife.
