Beautiful Nubia, a veteran Nigerian singer, has publicly called out fellow musician Yinka Ayefele and another artist, BBO, for alleged copyright theft.
In a post on X, the folk singer alleged that both musicians plagiarised the melody from his original song “Seven Lifes.”
According to him, Yinka Ayefele’s 2012 tune “My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti)” and BBO’s latest song “Amin” were both inspired by his work.
He noted that it is alarming that Nigerian musicians, particularly gospel ones, continue to disregard copyright and originality.
The post instantly prompted internet discussion, with mixed opinions from other X users.
One commenter disputed the statement, claiming that in music and literature, originality frequently builds on previous works. He mentioned the concept of intertextuality, claiming that every tune is inspired by previous sounds.
Another user mentioned that he recognised parallels when he first heard BBO’s “Amin.”
Others defended the accused artists, claiming that musicians are naturally inspired by what they listen to and that similarities do not always indicate intentional copying.
One commentator added that BBO had previously stated that he acquired the inspiration for “Amin” while serving in the National Youth Service Corps, long before the scandal.
