According to a report by The Times of Isreal on May 9, 2026, Steve Witkoff, special envoy, and Marco Rubio, US secretary of state, met with Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, prime minister of Qatar, today in Miami.
The focus of the meeting was on the role of Doha as mediator in establishing an inviolable truce between the US and Iran.
While Pakistan has assumed the role of mediator, Qatar has discreetly acted as an intermediary in these delicate discussions.
The diplomatic channels are being used, as previously reported, and this arrangement verifies that.
Doha is unwilling to take a more prominent role, even though the Trump administration would have liked Qatar to be the main conduit because of its track record of success in handling international crises and conflicts, such as the Gaza crisis.
Officials from Qatar are worried that if they play a big part in the negotiations, pro-Israel campaigners will accuse them of favouring Iran, and if the negotiations fail, they would be held responsible.
The involvement of high-ranking officials is indicative of the continuous endeavours to mend fences and establish a permanent peace in the area by means of meticulous multilateral cooperation.
On Friday, the prime minister of Qatar met separately with US vice president JD Vance at the White House, where they probably discussed other diplomatic issues.
