The African football community has gone into grief following the unexpected death of Malian journalist Mohamed Soumare in Rabat, Morocco.
Soumare, a recognised media officer for Stade Malien de Bamako and Head of Marketing and Media for the Malian Professional League, was discovered unresponsive in his hotel room while covering the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to sources, officials have yet to reveal the specific circumstances of his death, leaving colleagues, fans, and the larger sports media community stunned.
Soumare was in Morocco for official AFCON assignment and was supposed to cover Nigeria’s semi-final match versus Morocco on Wednesday, January 14, just hours before he was discovered.
According to reports, hotel staff discovered him early in the morning, prompting the arrival of local police and forensic specialists.
Investigations into the cause of death are still continuing, and consular services are collaborating with Moroccan authorities to aid his family.
