Suspected armed robber arrested for killing his gang member in Oyo

On Friday, November 25, an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan issued a remand order for 48-year-old Ajibola Akinpelu to the Correctional Centre in Ibadan for the suspected murder of a gang member and armed robbery.

Akinpelu is being tried for five counts that include murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy.

Due to a lack of jurisdiction, the Magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Akande, declined to accept the defendant’s plea.

The case was postponed to January 10, 2023 by Akande, who also instructed the police to send the case file back to the DPP for legal counsel.

Earlier, Mr. Philip Amusan, the prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant and his now-wanted accomplices are accused of committing the crimes on September 10 between 10:30 pm and 2:30 am at at Egbeda area, Ibadan.

Amusan alleged that the defendant and his gang members, while armed with guns and cutlasses, robbed Mohammed Adamu, of the sum of N2 million.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant also on Sept. 11, killed one of his gang members, Gbenga Iroko, during a robbery operation, deposited his body at the Lagos State Accident and Emergency centre and fled.

He further alleged that the defendant allegedly sold charms to his gang members for fortification against arrest.

He said the offences contravened Sections 6 B, and 1(2)(a) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearms Laws of Nigeria, 2004.

Amusan said the crimes also contravened Sections 213 of the Criminal Laws of Nigeria, 1990, and Section 319 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
