Surgical error: How my wife passed away after doctors allegedly left scissors in her stomach – Husband

Abubakar Muhammad, a native of Kano, discusses what transpired and accuses the hospital of medical carelessness. His wife, Aishatu Umar, died at Abubakar Imam Urology Centre due to complications from the surgical surgery.

Muhammad claimed in an interview with Daily Trust that his wife, a mother of five, died early on Monday morning, approximately four months after medical staff at the state-run hospital in Kano State’s Fagge Local Government Area allegedly left a pair of surgical scissors inside her abdomen during an operation.

Muhammad claims that Aishatu became ill a few months ago and had surgery in September at the hospital. He claimed that she started having excruciating, ongoing stomach pain soon after the treatment.

He said that after going back to the hospital on several occasions to report her health, she was just given painkillers without any more medical examination.

“Each time she went back to complain, they only prescribed painkillers. They kept telling her the pain was normal for patients who had undergone surgery, but they never recommended an X-ray or any form of scan,” he said.

He clarified that during the ensuing months, her condition kept becoming worse. Only a few days before she passed away, physicians at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital reportedly found a pair of surgical scissors that had been left within her body during the previous procedure.

Muhammad stated that although a corrective surgery to remove the object was planned, his wife passed away before the procedure could be completed. He called the event “gross medical negligence,” claiming that it had deeply hurt his family and raised grave questions about the healthcare system’s professional standards.

“While we acknowledge that death is inevitable, we cannot understand how such an error could occur during a surgical procedure. Incidents like this undermine public confidence in medical professionals and health institutions,” Muhammad said.

In order to ensure that justice is done, the bereaved spouse urged the Kano State Government and pertinent health regulatory bodies to conduct a comprehensive investigation. The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has responded by directing a prompt and thorough examination into the claim.

Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the Board’s Executive Secretary, said on Tuesday that the investigation would concentrate on determining the incident’s facts and circumstances.

The Board reiterated its commitment to upholding high standards of healthcare delivery throughout Kano State and reassured the public that patient safety continues to be a top concern.
