Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar calls on Keir Starmer to resign, saying: “The distraction needs to end and the leadership in Downing Street has to change”
“I have to be honest about failure wherever I see it,” Sarwar tells a news conference, adding: “They promised they were going to be different, but too much has happened”
It comes after Starmer’s director of communications Tim Allan resigned, a day after the prime minister’s chief of staff quit
On Sunday, Morgan McSweeney left the PM’s top team, saying he took “full responsibility” for advising Starmer to appoint Peter Mandelson as US ambassador in 2024
Asked if Starmer will also resign, No 10 says: “No. The prime minister is concentrating on the job in hand”. Cabinet ministers, including Deputy PM David Lammy and Chancellor Rachel Reeves, have since voiced their support for the PM
Meanwhile, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch says Starmer has lost control of his party
